DAY 3 — LOVE IS MORE THAN A FEELING

Scriptural Thought
Our culture often describes love primarily as a feeling.
“I love you because you make me happy.”
“I love being around you.”
“I love how you make me feel.”
Feelings aren't bad.
But feelings change.
John gives us something stronger.
Love means doing what God has commanded us.
That means biblical love isn't controlled exclusively by how we feel about somebody.
Sometimes loving people feels wonderful.
Sometimes loving people is inconvenient.
Sometimes love requires patience.
Sometimes love requires forgiveness.
Sometimes love requires telling the truth.
Sometimes love requires boundaries.
Sometimes love means showing grace when you'd rather walk away.
And sometimes love means obeying God even when another person doesn't understand your decision.
Imagine a parent watching a young child reach toward a hot stove.
The child may become upset when the parent pulls their hand away.
From the child's perspective, Mom or Dad interrupted something they wanted.
But the parent's action wasn't unloving.
The boundary existed because of love.
This is one reason truth and love cannot be separated.
Truth without love can become harsh.
Love separated from truth can become permission.
Jesus demonstrates something better.
Love without compromise.
John's message isn't:
Choose truth or love.
It's:
Walk in truth AND walk in love.
The two aren't competing Christian ideals; they belong together.
Reflection
Do I usually lean toward truth without enough love, or love without enough truth?
Is there someone God is calling me to love through obedience rather than emotion?
3-Step Application
1. PRAY BEFORE YOU RESPOND.
Ask, “Jesus, what would loving this person Your way look like?”
2. CHOOSE BOTH TRUTH AND LOVE.
Don't sacrifice one to preserve the other.
3. DO SOMETHING LOVING.
Encourage someone, forgive someone, serve someone, make the call, send the message, or have the honest conversation.
Closing Prayer
Father, teach me to love people the way You love them. Keep me from using truth as a weapon, but also keep me from calling something love that requires me to ignore Your truth. Give me wisdom, compassion, courage, and obedience. Let people experience Jesus through the way I love them. In Jesus' name, amen.
Remember
Real love doesn't abandon truth.
Real truth doesn't abandon love.
